  25. A wild guess: parity;  sometimes I see this when calling a CI$ dialin port 
  26. unless I change my terminal to 7E1.  Once the port's in passthru mode, 8N1 is 
  27. fine.

  29. I'm going to assume that these are not line noise characters, and that the 
  30. modem's connect string includes something like "/REL" or "/ARQ" to tell you 
  31. that error correction is engaged.
