- A wild guess: parity; sometimes I see this when calling a CI$ dialin port
- unless I change my terminal to 7E1. Once the port's in passthru mode, 8N1 is
- fine.

- I'm going to assume that these are not line noise characters, and that the
- modem's connect string includes something like "/REL" or "/ARQ" to tell you
- that error correction is engaged.
